Random ramblings from my beer soaked melon about politics, religion, sex, stupidities, nature, and any other subject that penetrates the haze. Sometimes crude and not for the faint of heart or people with normal intelligence, or an abundance of common sense.

GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SALE!

The superior man understands what is right; the inferior man understands what will sell.
Confucius

Mitt Romney claims that his vast experience in business running a corporate raiding company makes him the best choice to run the United States.
In his nomination acceptance speech he had what I consider a telling Freudian slip when he said that he was the best choice to get this company back on track.
He had another when he introduced Paul Ryan as his Vice Presidential pick. Introducing him as, “The next President of the United States.”
Makes me wonder who would be in charge.
I don't know about you but in my working experience the last person I would expect to lead this country out of the dark depression that Bush and the Republican Congress of his time and the present is someone who making things better for the workers (read 99% of Americans) is ever more than a happy accident on the road to maximizing profits for his Stockholders (read rich big business masters.)
I think I'm going to stick with the person who through his words and actions that he wants to make things better for the whole country.
The thing I fear is that unless we give President Obama decisive victories in both the House and Senate and eliminate the unconstitutional Filibuster Rule it will just be more of the life destroying political games that take the place of honorable public service all across The United States in a time when the Citizens United decision could be the law of the land.
Then again as always, I could be full of shit...

Voter Fraud?

When a place gets crowded enough to require ID's, social collapse is not far away. It is time to go elsewhere. The best thing about space travel is that it made it possible to go elsewhere.
Robert A. Heinlein
Time Enough For Love.

It’s hard to keep track of all the crazy schemes that are being passed as laws in states to suppress the vote. All because of the claim that they are fighting voter fraud that has been proven not to exist.
There are all the Voter ID laws that require picture ID that you can only get with documentation that has never been needed before and in many cases will cost money to obtain.
The Texas law will accept a concealed carry gun permit as valid ID but not a student ID from a State college.
The people least likely to have the needed ID in every state passing the laws are the people most likely to vote for Democrats.
Now add the special wrinkles that have been added by many Republican controlled state governments.
First they close offices that would be issuing the required ID’s in urban areas more likely to vote Democratic and keep them open in Republican areas even though they have much lower populations.
Then they started limiting the hours they are open to the times that poor and middle class voters are working and can’t take off to get the ID.
Then you start limiting early voting to fewer days and only during the week in normal working hours. End all weekend voting when working people have the time to vote.
Where you can register to vote or request an absentee ballot on-line discontinue the service. Pennsylvania did this today. You can’t do it now.
Then there is Florida where they are challenging the right of many people to vote because they might not be U.S. citizens. The people checked on the lists so far are U.S. citizens who are eligible to vote but the burden falls on the individual to prove this if they want to vote.
There are lots of court cases pending fighting all this stuff but I don’t hold out much hope for too many victories for the people seeking to expand the number of people able to vote.
I got to thinking the other day. I know that that is usually a bad idea in my case.
What was bugging me was the memory of something from the years of the Bush administration though I don’t remember exactly when. My memory is sort of vague and I’m too lazy to do actual research.
I remember that there was a big push at one time in the Congress to establish a national ID card. If I remember right Sen. John McCain was one of the people advocating the requirement to have every U.S. Citizen issued a Federal ID.
There was a lot of opposition from many sides to this. It just smacked too much of Big Brother and the world described in the book 1984.
Like I say, I got to thinking about this and noticed that as far as I can tell not one Republican has suggested a Federal ID since this big push against nonexistent voter fraud began.
Curious...
What surer way would there be to eliminate any possibility of voter fraud if everyone had a government ID card from birth just like a Social Security card. The issuing would become automatic and while it does smack of Big Brother and might be bad I’m not sure it would be any different than now with everyone having a Social Security number and having to file taxes every year.
The thing I find curious is that if they really want to make sure that nobody can vote who is not eligible to vote why aren’t they pushing for a Federal ID every chance they get?
Maybe they don’t they want to solve this nonexistent problem?
